Among the vineyards and cherry trees of Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde lives a small wonder with curly fur and an exceptional nose: the Lagotto Romagnolo.
Originally bred in the marshlands of Romagna as a water retriever, the Lagotto has a long and noble Italian history. This ancient breed appears in Etruscan sculptures and Renaissance frescoes—including a 15th-century painting by Mantegna in the Ducal Palace of Mantua. Later, in 1627, the artist Guercino portrayed a Lagotto in a painting commissioned by the Farnese family—wearing a red collar with the ducal crest. That’s how far back the bond between Italians and this remarkable dog goes.
Over the centuries, the Lagotto’s purpose shifted. As wetlands were drained and the breed’s retrieving role faded, its sharp sense of smell found a new vocation: truffle hunting. Today, the Lagotto Romagnolo is the only recognized breed specialized in truffle searching—and one of the most intelligent, loyal, and trainable dogs in the world.
At our estate, our Lagotto Proserpina is not only a beloved member of the family, but also a future truffle queen. She has been raised with care, surrounded by nature, and followed by expert hands.
Our Puppies: Beauty, Intelligence, and Heart
Proserpina has recently become a mother—and now, two of her gorgeous male puppies are ready to find a loving home.
They are three months old, full of life, curiosity, and unmistakable charm. One has a rich brown coat, the other is roan with white and chestnut markings. Both are little treasures.
Raised on the estate with constant human contact, these puppies have received exceptional care:
Second vaccine completed, deworming cycle finished
European pet passport and health booklet
ENCI pedigree (ROI) — the father is a certified ENCI stud; the mother is in training
Genetic tests clear of hereditary diseases
First exposure to truffle scent
Socialized with people and other animals
Used to car rides, crates, a stable sleep–wake routine, and relieving themselves outdoors

They are hypoallergenic, suitable for families and children, and have been lovingly followed by a veterinary technician and canine educator. At Tenuta Santa Maria Valverde, nothing is left to chance — not even the way a puppy grows up.
Delivery throughout Italy is free of charge, personally handled by us.
